On 17 July 1865, the climbing party comprising Jean-Antoine Carrel – who had descended after seeing Whymper’s team on the summit – set off once more for the summit from the Italian side on 16 July, together with Jean-Baptiste Bich, Jean-Augustin Meynet and Abbé Gorret. On 17 July, Carrel and Bich managed to reach the summit, following a variant of what is now the standard Italian route. The ‘sacrifice’ made by Abbé Gorret and Jean-Augustin Meynet, who stayed behind to facilitate a rappel that allowed the climbers to set off on the final section of the route, proved absolutely essential to the climbers’ success.
